At 11 years old she was working sound at her local church and the passion for live audio was lit. From touring with George Strait to working NASCAR halftime shows, Erika West is a seasoned L-Acoustics expert. As an L-Acoustics Applications Consultant, she is hugely passionate about education and sharing her experiences and expertise with our L-Acoustics community. Let’s get to know her as part of #SoundEducation spotlight series! 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀? “I started running sound for my church when I was 11 years old. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and found the world of audio so fascinating. Starting that young, I didn’t understand much, but I knew that I loved it and had fun learning and doing more. I started running the live sound team at age 15 and conducted most of the trainings for the team. It wasn’t until I was 18 or 19 years of age that I was sat down by 2 of my greatest mentors and told that I should pursue this as my career. Until then I had never been paid to run sound or teach. I only did it because I loved it.” 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗟-𝗔𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆? “I was approached by L-Acoustics to become an Applications Consultant in early 2022. After inquiring further about what that meant, I learned that I would get to share my passion with others by teaching again, I happily agreed to move forward and learn how to become a better trainer from the amazing applications and education team members at L-Acoustics.” 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗟-𝗔𝗰𝗼𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿? “I think the best thing about teaching is getting to share your passion and fire with others with a ultimate goal of helping them to grow and do better. In my classes, I strive to be transparent and open about how I have done things less than perfect in the past in an attempt to help them learn from my mistakes. I can honestly say that it’s not easy to get in front of a class of 12-14 people and be that open or vulnerable, but I remind myself that the reason I do it is because I was once at their stage of learning and that I want to make them feel more comfortable with asking questions.” 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱? “To anyone wanting to learn more about deploying L-Acoustics systems, I would recommend them to our 360 education platform, our classes, and our YouTube channel. The education team has done a phenomenal job creating content and skills development lessons for all levels of learners including rigging videos, expert insights, and Soundvison Quickstart videos that are available on the e-learning platform!”

Known for a world-record setting fireworks show, Mott, N. Dakota (pop. 653) is a tiny town with fiery aspirations. But that’s not all. Mott-native Alex Johnson rode his wave of passion for live audio and never gave up. As Head of Audio at First Avenue & the 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis, Alex works with the first North American L2 from Allied Productions & Sales / Allied Audio Services install everyday. We sat down with him to learn more! 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝? It kind of happened by accident. I didn’t know what I wanted to do in college. I liked music and I’ve always enjoyed playing with tech, so I enrolled in the music industry program. I learned about recording/live sound and became obsessed. I started doing gigs on campus and before I knew it - all over town. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 1𝐬𝐭 𝐣𝐨𝐛 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫? My first pro job was as a house audio tech at The Hub in Fargo, ND. It was a great experience. I learned what it takes to be a good monitor engineer. 𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝐚 ‘𝐛𝐢𝐠 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤’? When I started working at The Hub I was thrown into the fire a little - but I learned quickly. I was doing monitors for major acts such as Bone Thugs N Harmony. 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐋-𝐀𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦? The Palace Theater in St Paul. The Jayhawks played over K2 and it sounded fantastic. 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞? I moved to St Paul in 2017 and I emailed every club in town. One person answered - none other than Conrad Sverkesen. He gave me a job as a stagehand and that's how I met Greg Huber - the head engineer at the club. Greg and I hit it off and after proving myself he gave me a shot at doing monitors. The rest is history. 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧! First Avenue is the quintessential rock club. It’s a part of Minnesota history! It has this great charm that’s a little rough around the edges. Everything feels bigger. The sound, the lights, the energy. When you walk in you feel like you're about to be part of something really special. It’s intimate, it’s energetic, it’s raw. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐠𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬? We needed a PA that could give everyone in the audience a great experience. As soon as L2 became an option it was the obvious choice. We tuned its width so that it can evenly cover the floor and the balcony without much change. That was a huge selling point. 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐲? As an install, less enclosures meant easier installation, improved efficiency and better performance. By design L Series has inherently less issues with comb filtering & better coupling between drivers. Consistency is the biggest standout to me compared to other systems. Learn more in Part II of our #SystemSpotlight with Alex!

AgorÀ Srl provided the power of K2 for star singer Mika on his latest tour through Europe! The main system consisted of 16 K2 L/R with 6 KS28 flown in cardioid on each side. Kara sidehangs helped provide additional SPL coverage in venues such as the Amphitheatre Centre de Congrès in Lyon pictured below. System Engineer Filippo Panella did a great job in ensuring that the FOH mix got to every seat in the house!
